Old Fashioned Southern Biscuits:

  • 3 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 8 Tablespoons all-vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat over to 450 degrees.

  1. In a large mixing bowl add dry ingrendients. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter and shortening into dry ingredients until it begins to look like corn meal.
  2. Add buttermilk to mixture ...using a folk; stir until dough ball begins to form.
  3. Add dough to floured surface, spinkle with flour until no longer sticky, roll out 1/2-inch thick.
  4. Cut biscuits out with a 2-inch floured cutter.
  5. Place on ungreased baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden brown.

Serve hot. Makes 10-14 biscuits.

Tips: Biscuits can be thicker or thinner depending on how the dough is rolled out.
