Bengali Fish Fry Recipe || Popular Bengali Tea Time Snack || Kolkata style Fish Fry

Benglis love fish and use various ingredients and style of cooking them depending upon speceies, habitat and inherent flavours.Fish fry is a very popular bengali tea time snack and is also widely served on important social ocassions. It is actually made from original Bhetki which I have used.However, it can also be prepared with the larger sea bred bhetki, which is commonly referred to as *Bombay Bhetki* and other typically flavoured salt water fishes of the same family.It is very crunchy and mouth watering. It is very easy to prepare at home.

Ingredients:

  • Bread crumbs as required
  • Ginger paste -- 1 1/2 tsp
  • Garlic paste -- 1 1/2 tsp
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Salt to taste
  • Onion paste -- 2 tbsp
  • Fish fillet -- 400gms (bhetki/bassa/cat fish)
  • Eggs -- 2
  • Chopped criender leaves-- 1 tbsp
  • Lemon juice - 1 tsp
  • Green chilli paste -- 1/2 tsp

Method:

Marination:

  1. Firstly clean the fish fillets with water and tap it dry with paper towel.

Marinate the the fish fillets with:

  1. onion paste- 2 tbsp.
  2. ginger paste - 1 1/2 tsp
  3. garlic paste - 1 1/2 tsp
  4. green chilli paste - 1/2 tsp
  5. Salt- as per taste
  6. Cover it and refrigarate for minimun 2-3 hrs.
  7. After 2-3 hrs, take the marinated fish. Add 1 tsp of lemon juice and keep aside for another 10 minutes.
  8. Now beat the 2 eggs with salt and 1 tsp of chopped coriender leaves.
  9. Take bread crumbs separately on a flat dish.
  10. Coat the marinated fish with beaten eggs and then with bread crumbs. Repeat the process for all the fish fillets.
  11. Now put it back in the refrigarator for another 30 minutes.
  12. Heat oil in a deep pan and fry it on low flame till golden brown.
  13. Take it off on paper towel.
  14. Serve hot with onion rings and kashundi (Mustard sauce).
